New IT giant, arivia.kom awarded Lesotho election contract

Johannesburg, 08 Aug 2001

The new information technology giant, arivia.kom, has been awarded a R15.5 million contract to deliver an integrated voter registration and election system for the mountain kingdom of Lesotho.

In order to eliminate fraud in terms of double registration and double voting, arivia.kom makes use of the latest technology, which ensures the highest levels of security.

Says Johnny Grobler of arivia.kom: "The contract involves the provision of a total IT solution. This includes: setting up the sites; providing software; registration of voters; capturing of biological data, fingerprint, photograph and signature onto databases; issuing of cards; and production of a voters` roll which includes the biological information, for double checking.

"This voters` roll will be supplied to the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) according to the different constituencies to ensure that the voter votes where he/she is registered."

Registration will commence on 13 August with voting scheduled for January next year.

The main advantages of the fully computerised system are the high levels of security afforded and the speed at which the process takes place. At the same time, the system is user friendly and has taken the client`s unique requirements into account.

Says Grobler: "A voters card will be issued during the registration process. On the day of the election the voter will have to present his card. The photo and information will then be compared to the voters list."

Arivia.kom has extensive experience and expertise in the design, implementation and development of not only voter registration and election systems but also ID, drivers licences, vehicle registration and cash payment systems.

Having won the bulk of the contracts in identification technology, arivia.kom has some impressive success stories throughout Africa. They include Cash Payment systems (Free State, Western Cape, Gauteng and Namibia), Voter Registration Systems (South Africa 1994, Zanzibar 2000), Temporary Voters Cards (Lesotho), National Transport Information System (Malawi), Drivers Licences and Vehicle Registration Systems (South Africa, Zambia, Egypt, Lesotho), National ID Card and AFIS (Botswana, Zanzibar) and Identification Cards (South African Police, Ugandan Police, Botswana Police). Concludes Grobler: "arivia.kom specialises in smart technology, beneficiary payment systems, biometrics, card solutions and applicable software and we pride ourselves on our ability to deliver effective integrated business solutions."
