Van Zyl and Pritchard (VZAP) says 20 Java students have graduated from its Java course, which is targeted at both individuals and companies.

The students were selected to participate in the company`s Java course following their performance in a four-month generic entry-level programming course, which covers the fundamentals of programming, identifying and solving problems, designing solutions and applying technology.

Some of the Java graduates have already been placed within companies. Domingos Dias, development manager within the Home Loans division of Standard Bank, has placed two of the students as junior Java developers. He believes the employees have "very positive attitudes" and rates their performance over the past six months as "above average".

Chris O`Connell, divisional manager of the Application Development division of Iocore, says the company has taken on four or five Oracle-trained students from VZAP.

According to Bridget Orr, marketing manager at VZAP, the students are proficient in a variety of programming environments.

"We preferably place our Java students in companies that have a Java development area. However, they are not limited to only Java, as they have been exposed to the object-oriented environment and can enter any object-oriented field," says Orr.

"Our students are highly sought-after because they are taught to problem solve in a practical environment, a methodology adopted by very few training institutions," says Jonathon Fuller, MD of VZAP.
