New Lumia to have PureView tech?

Johannesburg, 03 Sep 2012

Photos have emerged online purporting to be leaked images of the new Lumia handsets that will be unveiled by Nokia and Microsoft on Wednesday (5 September).

The images were initially tweeted by Twitter account Evleaks, which has a reputation for leaking Android information and has been proven reliable in the past.

The photos are said to show the high-end Lumia 920 and mid-range Lumia 820. According to the , the Lumia 920 will have a 4.5-inch display and will feature Nokia PureView camera technology. It is said the Lumia 820 will not feature the PureView technology, but have a similar look and feel to the flagship Lumia 920, with a 4.3-inch display.

The Nokia PureView 808 scooped up the “Best of Show” award at this year's Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, and was one of the big surprises of the show, featuring a 41MP camera. However, apart from the camera, the specs of the PureView 808 were not particularly impressive, with a 4-inch nHD 640x360 display, 512MB RAM and a 1.3GHz single-core processor.

According to Nokia, the PureView technology is not about taking images the size of billboards, but rather about creating higher quality pictures at normal sizes that are manageable for smartphones.

As explained by Nokia Conversations' Ian Delaney: “The technology means that taking typically sized shots (say, 5MP) the camera can use oversampling to combine up to seven pixels into one 'pure' pixel, eliminating the visual noise found on other mobile phone cameras.”

Users can also capture an image at a high resolution of 38MP then reframe, crop and zoom before saving the image to the phone.

Should the Lumia 920 feature PureView camera technology, it is expected that it will not be on quite the same level as the 42MP PureView 808. This will be in order to keep the design of the handset slim and not too bulky since the PureView 808 weighs a hefty 169g and measures 17.95mm at its thickest point.
