High definition (HD) TV owners can now play digital videos, photos or music directly on their TV sets, no matter whether the media is stored locally, on the home network, or the Internet, thanks to a new HD TV media player from Netgear.
The Netgear NTV550, distributed in South Africa by Duxbury Networking, allows users to connect Internet-ready devices such as IPTV set-top boxes, media players and game consoles to HD TV sets and the home network.
Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking, says one of the biggest drivers of sales of Web-connected consumer electronics products is access to premium content such as online video and music, as well as personal content such as photographs.
“The NTV550 capitalises on this demand, offering users a range of options to create a Web-enabled living environment, at the same time offering one of the most complete access routes to media collections, whether stored on USB storage devices, hard drives, memory cards, home media servers, home networks or on the Internet,” he says.
The Netgear NTV550 supports HD 1080p, Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound standards and provides an additional E-SATA port for faster transfer speeds and advanced metadata tagging.
Other NTV550 features include a built-in memory card slot for instant photo slideshows on the TV, DLNA/UPnP compatibility for access to media servers, network share connectivity and an optional wireless connection via Netgear's Universal WiFi Internet Adapter.
