New mobile processor options from Intel

Johannesburg, 21 Jun 2000

Intel has broadened its mobile processor range with the introduction of five CPUs for mobile PCs, including the first Pentium III to average less than a single watt power consumption.

Ranging from 500MHz to 750MHz and spanning both the Celeron and Pentium III product families, the processors are targeted at full-size, thin-and-light and ultra-portable machines. Intel claims that its new mobile PIII processor with Intel SpeedStep technology is the fastest mobile PC processor available, coming in at 750MHz. On its battery-optimised mode, the processor drops to 600MHz, but uses less than 2 watts of power.

The 600MHz flavour also features SpeedStep technology, and uses a low 1.1 watt of power, which drops to under a watt in its battery-optimised mode, with the speed dropping to 500MHz. This processor is targeted at machines that weigh less than three pounds and are less than one inch tall.

Intel also introduced mobile Intel Celeron processors at 650MHz and 600MHz to cater to the value mobile PC segment.

A new mobile Intel Celeron processor at 500MHz offers 1.35 volt operation. The chip is targeted at the value ultra-portable mobile market.

All processors are available immediately.
