Nortel has appointed Darryl Edwards as executive VP of its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

He is replacing Steve Pusey, who is leaving Nortel to join the Vodafone Group as its CTO.

Edwards has been with Nortel for 14 years and has served as CEO of Nortel in Israel and president of Nortel`s operations in Northern Europe and the Middle East.

Mike Zafirovski, president and CEO of Nortel, says Edwards has tremendous experience throughout the entire EMEA region and is the right person to lead Nortel`s efforts in an area that is vital to Nortel`s future success.

Edwards also has a good sales and management track record and has surpassed his targets every year at Nortel, Zafirovski says.

Nortel has previously stated its intention to strengthen its Africa operations, despite the intended global restructuring exercise that is expected to result in a net loss of 1 100 jobs.

Yves Roux, Nortel`s VP for Africa, says SA and Algeria were key to this strengthening plan, for different reasons. The South African economy is strong, and now that deregulation is taking place, there are excellent opportunities for Nortel to provide its services, he explains.

Roux notes that Nortel had scaled down its investments in Algeria due to terrorism. However, the company intended to catch up on its infrastructure investment in that country.

As Vodafone`s CTO, Pusey will be responsible for all aspects of Vodafone`s networks, IT capability and supply chain management, the group said in a media statement earlier this week.
