New PC offerings from IBM

Johannesburg, 12 Oct 2001

IBM launched four ThinkPad notebooks and three NetVista desktop PCs today, along with its new embedded subsystem and various PC management tools.

According to IBM, the security subsystem automatically encrypts a user`s keys, files and e-mails, protecting from intrusion over both and wired networks. It also helps identify computer users involved in transactions, and helps ensure data transmissions are authentic, confidential and intact. IBM`s security subsystem can encrypt data on the PC`s hard drive, so that even if the computer is stolen, the information cannot be accessed.

The new machines also feature IBM`s ImageUltra, a set of software and services designed to help administrators manage PC images.

New NetVista desktop PCs include a new M series, focusing on maximum performance and stability with enhanced security models; an upgraded A series; and an improved X series, with its emphasis on design.

The new ThinkPads include the first in a new line, the R30; a new A Series, the A30, redesigned to feature two modular bays and Web navigation keys; the X22, offering security features for the first time on an IBM ultra-portable notebook; and finally the ThinkPad T23, with a faster Intel Processors as well as the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem on selected models.

ThinkPad A, T and X Series models are available in SA now; the ThinkPad R30 will be available on 30 October.

Other PC services announced today include IBM`s ImageUltra, a set of software and services designed to help administrators manage PC images; IBM Access Support; and Rapid Restore PC. Access Support provides users with automated solutions to commonly reported problems for self-diagnosis. IBM says Rapid Restore PC provides automated disk backup and easy restore capabilities.
