New Web site will empower women and increase ICT skills, says DTPS deputy minister Hlangiwe Mkhize.

A new Web site aimed at empowering women and increasing their ICT skills was launched this morning by the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS), in partnership with Deloitte SA, Intel SA, Huawei, Landbank and Telkom SA.

The portal, designed by Deloitte SA, will exclusively cater to women from the Tlhabane community in the North West province, and allows them to upload their business profiles, share business information and within their community.

It will also act as a support mechanism for women who have been victims of abuse by providing information for local councillors, police and support groups in the area.

Telkom SA is providing the technical infrastructure needed for the Web site as well as connectivity.

Intel SA will provide training, and the first group of 20 women were trained in December and the second group in January. Training will continue every month and two women from the community were also trained to support the Web site.

Huawei sponsored 20 tablets for the first group of women to kick-start the project and Landbank will donate five laptops and a printer.

This project follows a visit by DTPS deputy minister Hlengiwe Mkhize to Tlhabane in November last year, when the community requested support for women in the area, specifically on gender-based violence and economic growth.
