Overland Storage has introduced the Ultamus series of primary storage appliances, aimed at the mid-range market.

The company is now positioned to target all tiers of the storage market - primary, secondary and tertiary, says John Mills, Overland pre-sales manager.

The Ultamus series complements Overland`s existing product offerings of disk back-based backup and recovery appliances for secondary storage and tape automation appliances for long-term archiving, says Mills.

"Our overall game plan is to enable seamless migration from one tier to another," he explains, adding that this will be achieved with Ultamus 2, due for release next year.

The Ultamus series is aimed at companies with about 25 servers and between 250 and 500 users, Mills says.

"It is challenging to move into the primary storage sector in the mid-range market, but Overland has been in this space with tape-based solutions. Currently, many low-level players are entering this market and there is also a move down by many enterprise vendors," he says.

The launch of Ultamus follows the company`s acquisition of software vendor Zetta Systems in August, and Mills notes that the features of Zetta`s software are central to the Ultamus Protection OS.

"We made a good investment in Zetta Systems. We`ve rebranded the company so that it fits in with our whole strategy."

Drive Control will distribute the product locally.
