New report confirmation: EMC number one supplier of networked storage, external RAID in 2002

By EMC Southern Africa
Johannesburg, 12 Mar 2003

EMC Corporation was the world`s number one provider of networked information storage (open SAN and NAS) and external RAID systems once again in 2002, according to new market share released today by research firm IDC (a). The findings also show EMC gained market share in the fourth quarter of 2002 to finish the year as the revenue leader in both the networked storage and external RAID systems markets.

According to IDC, EMC led the growing networked storage market with 30.1% revenue share in 2002, gaining market share in the fourth quarter. EMC`s networked storage market share was more than 50% higher than number two Hewlett-Packard`s share in 2002, and all other suppliers were below 10% share. Networked storage accounted for 54% of all external RAID revenue in 2002, reported IDC, as customers deployed more networked-attached storage (NAS) and open storage area networks (SAN) than direct-attached storage (DAS) systems for the first time.

For the sixth consecutive year, EMC also led the external RAID storage market in 2002 with 20.1% revenue share (b). EMC`s external RAID revenue grew nearly 22% from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, according to IDC. External RAID storage includes all controller-based disk storage systems that are not embedded inside servers.

David Goulden, EMC Executive Vice-President of Global Marketing and New Business Development, said: "In a year when customers experienced unprecedented pressure on information technology spending, organisations around the world accelerated their move to consolidated networked storage and made EMC number one once again. EMC, by dramatically broadening our product portfolio, has evolved from a primary focus on high-end platforms to being the only company offering a full range of open, networked storage solutions that address the needs of organisations large and small. IDC`s fourth-quarter and full-year findings are proof that EMC`s transition is being embraced by our customers."

According to IDC, EMC also led the external RAID controller-based storage market for both Unix and Windows NT/2000 in 2002, with 23% and 22% revenue shares, respectively. External RAID controller-based storage revenue for Unix and Windows NT/2000 represented a combined 78% of the total external RAID storage market in 2002.
