New site compares cell contracts

Kekkel.com, a Web site developed to help cellphone users find the most appropriate cellular contract based on their usage patterns, went live last week.

The site allows cellphone users to compare and search for the best contracts available from SA`s three cellphone networks. It is updated daily, but once it is stable, it will be updated once a week, says Gustav Melck, the site developer.

Melck has funded the site in his personal capacity and hopes to get advertising for the site in future to provide him with an alternative revenue stream. "If the site is successful then it will start generating revenue through advertising," says Melck.

"The site is a completely independent, social responsibility initiative. I started the site as a result of my personal encounter with contracts and realised that more people could be facing a similar problem with their cellphone contracts. There are some cases when operators will appear more than once. It all depends on the user`s selection."

Cellphone call rates were obtained from the various cellphone providers` Web sites and saved to Melck`s personal database. "I then linked the database to the kekkel.com site to provide the to the users.

"The Web site advises people on the most suitable cellphone contract to use for their minimum call durations, including the amount of transfers they make per month, the number of SMS messages and data bundles. The site is aimed at existing cellphone subscribers who would like to make sure they are using the cheapest option. Most people don`t use their cellphone contracts optimally.

"People send out a lot of SMSes every day and don`t really know much about which data bundles to use, which contracts to use or which is the best cellphone network for their needs," says Melck.
