New smartphone to release soon

Johannesburg, 26 Jan 2004

AnexTEK will soon release the SP230 Pocket PC and cellular phone, which will give users the ability to remotely synchronise their pocket PC with their PC and remotely run terminal services.

Nicholas O`Connor, AnexTEK sales director, says the SP230 will be the only smartphone in the country running the Microsoft Pocket PC Phone 2003 operating system.

"The AnexTEK SP230 is a Windows/Intel-based Tri-band phone with MMS, MSN, SMS, Outlook, calendar, contacts, instant messaging, Web browsing, and video/audio playback functionalities as well as being able to run programs like Word and Excel.

"With Microsoft`s active sync , documents, address books and calendars can be altered and remotely updated via GPRS," he says.

O`Connor says the SP230 user can also safely connect by means of a PIN and/or password though GPRS to an office and tap directly into corporate . Files can be downloaded and viewed on the phone, as well as manipulating enterprise applications through Microsoft`s Terminal Services.

O`Connor says the phone is being tested by MTN before it is approved for use on the operator`s network and should be available to the market by mid-February. It is hoped the smartphone will then be marketed under the MTN high-end contracts at no extra cost.

"Instead of spending hundreds of thousands on equipping large sales forces with PDAs, businesses may now have the option of getting the fully functional SP230 at no additional charge," he says.

The phone features an on-screen keyboard and handwriting recognition, and runs on a 400MHz Intel Xscale processor, with 64MB of RAM and 64MB ROM. It is also equipped with built-in secure digital and multimedia card expansion bays.
