The final specification for Serial ATA 1.0 was announced yesterday at Intel`s Developer Forum in San Jose, California. Designed to replace the current parallel ATA physical storage standard, the new spec offers 1.5Gbps transfer rates for hard drives, DVD and CD drives.
The interface will be introduced in future motherboards and drives for desktop and mobile PCs, value servers and network storage. With a low pin count, the new technology should allow system designers to build smaller motherboards for smaller form factors.
The first ATA/1500 storage solutions are expected in the first half of next year, with the development of compliant products already underway. The specification is available to the marketplace on a royalty-free basis.
The 74 supporters of the new standard include Dell, Intel, IBM, Maxtor and Seagate.
