Tarsus Technologies has announced the local availability of the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 Tape Drive. This high-capacity drive reduces costs while providing greater storage consolidation, cutting down the number of data cartridges required.
Says Terence Barter, product manager for Tarsus Technologies: "The Ultrium 960 represents the third generation of HP`s tape drive technology and as the highest capacity drive in the StorageWorks range it boasts a massive 800 gigabyte compressed storage capacity."
Barter explains how this is enabled using the new LTO 3 media. "This essentially doubles the capacity of current Ultrium drives, while reducing the costs to the customers as they require fewer cartridges for their data storage needs."
The Ultrium 960 also features a data transfer rate of 160 megabytes per second of compressed data. "This is achieved using a new 16 channel recording head and the Ultra320 SCSI interface," says Barter.
"This impressive transfer rate makes the Ultrium 960 the fastest tape drive in the world. The huge data demands of today`s enterprises coupled with narrowing backup windows make it the perfect solution for enterprise and mid-range servers, and entry-level hard drive arrays.
"There are also amazing pieces of software bundled with the drive to help customers get the most out of the Ultrium 960," continues Barter. "These include HP Data Protector and Yosemite TapeWare backup software as well as support for HP StorageWorks One-button Disaster Recovery and HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools."
Migrating from an older tape storage solution to the 960 has been facilitated by built-in backward compatibility with earlier units. "The Ultrium 960 is fully read and write compatible with all second-generation Ultrium media and is read compatible with first generation media," explains Barter.
"The Ultrium 960 is also HP`s first tape drive solution to deliver support for write-once, read-many media (WORM)," he adds.
The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 Tape Drive is unparalleled in speed and performance, offering a reliable and easily integrable backup and storage solution. "Customers can now manage all of their backup and archiving data protection needs with just one, cost-reducing drive," concludes Barter.
