New tape technology for Overland backup, recovery solutions

Johannesburg, 03 Mar 2005

Channel , the local distributor for Overland Storage, has announced the availability of LTO-3 tape drive technology in Overland`s NEO Series tape libraries.

"With immediate effect, Overland`s NEO 2000, NEO 4000 and NEO 8000 libraries will be LTO-3 equipped in line with Overland`s move to reduce downtime and ease backup procedures for its customers," says Amit Parbhucharan, technology marketing director at Channel .

Providing one of the highest capacity, fastest tape drive technologies available in the popular midrange tape library sector should boost interest in the tape medium, while offering users a flexible, reliable and affordable data protection solution," he says.

LTO-3 delivers a 400GB native capacity per tape cartridge and a native transfer rate of 80MBps. The technology provides NEO libraries with capacities ranging from 12 terabytes to 1.6 petabytes, and performance capabilities ranging from 288 gigabytes per hour to 28 terabytes per hour.

Parbhucharan says LTO-3 equipped NEO libraries now offer users a write-once-read-many (WORM) capability, enabling them to secure, manage and archive compliant data records, reducing the risk of non-compliance with government regulations.

"As an added benefit, these libraries require fewer tape cartridges and facilitate the use of smaller, more cost-effective tape libraries, giving users an opportunity to redirect a portion of their data protection budgets to disk-based solutions - such as Overland`s REO Series.

"By doing so, users can implement disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) solutions that combine the immediate restore capabilities of disk with the stability, portability and longevity associated with automated tape archival," he adds.
