New technologies for HP LaserJet 8100 series printers

Print Job Retention

The LaserJet 8100 printer offers the following features for more control over how and when print jobs are printed:

Private printing - gives the user the ability to control when a print job is printed. Before sending a job to the printer, the user selects a PIN number at the PC via the driver. The job is held at the printer until the user "releases" it by entering the PIN number at the printer`s control panel. *

Benefit: Protection for high-security or confidential documents.

Proof & hold - gives the user the ability to proof a print job before multiple copies are printed. Before sending the job to the printer, the user designates it as "proof & hold" at the PC via the driver, and one copy of the job is printed. Once the job is proofed, the user can release the rest of the copies at the printer`s control panel. The user also can change the number of copies or completely delete the job, right from the control panel, without having to go back to a PC. *

Benefit: Conserves paper and saves time by allowing the user to identify errors and make changes to a document before subsequent copies are printed.

Stored Jobs - gives the user the ability to store print jobs on the printer`s disk drive. Documents that typically are preprinted (for example, fax cover sheets, forms, training manuals, and so on) can be stored and printed on demand, right from the control panel, without having to go back to the PC. *

Benefit: Reduces paper waste and costs. Printing documents as needed decreases the amount of preprinted material that gets thrown away. This method also saves time by eliminating the need to open up an application at the PC to print such commonly printed documents as fax cover sheets, time sheets and calendars.

Quick copy - gives the user the ability to make up to 999 additional copies of the last print job printed, without opening up the application again and selecting reprint. *

Benefit: Let`s users decide at the printer that they need more copies than previously planned.

Variable fusing - provides improved print quality on heavy, rough or light media by varying the temperature of the fuser and speed of the engine. The user can set five fusing modes (different combinations of fusing temperature and engine speed) by designating a particular paper type.

Benefit: Better-looking output on heavy, rough or light media.

Usage Page - provides accurate printer-usage information. A reseller, network administrator or user can track the amount of pages printed, according to paper size. The tracked information is automatically backed up between the printer`s NV-RAM and hard disk to ensure the integrity and security of the data. The "usage page" can be printed from the control panel or from Web JetAdmin.

Benefit: Allows better management of printing costs by tracking printer usage.

HP InfraRed Connect (FIR) and job interrupt - enables walk-up, cable-free printing from portables, palmtops and other FIR-capable devices. HP LaserJet 8100 series printers also support HP JetSend technology over infrared. Job interrupt allows a FIR job to take precedence over any other job in the queue, thereby giving priority to "walk-up" jobs. The in-process job is maintained and resumed after the FIR job is complete.

Benefit: Saves time when printing from a FIR-capable device. Supporting HP JetSend technology over FIR also allows all current and future HP JetSend technology-enabled sending devices to print to LaserJet 8100 series printers, without a special driver.

Expanded help menu - enables trouble-shooting right at the printer`s control panel. By pressing the help key, the user will receive immediate help directly related to the problem at hand (for example, instructions on which door to open, which lever to pull, and so on).

Benefit: Saves time by eliminating the need to search for a manual or call on a network administrator. The expanded help menu offers a simple and immediate answer to printer questions.

Paper Handling

3,000-sheet stacker and 3,000-sheet stapler/stacker (expected to be available early spring, 1999) - prints, separates and staples up to 3,000 sheets, creating complete documents in just one step. It is also possible to use existing HP LaserJet 8000 paper handling accessories.

Benefit: Allows unattended printing of high-volume and multiple-set jobs. Avoids manual collation through automatic job separation (job offset).

Supplies Management

HP TonerGauge technology - In addition to Web JetAdmin software, the pixel-counting HP TonerGauge technology gives users the ability to monitor toner usage right from the control panel. The user can view the level of toner available over the entire life of the toner cartridge, instead of when it`s low.

Paper gauge - lets users know the level of paper available in the printer.

Benefit: Saves time and money. Simplifies the job of managing a network printer and takes the guesswork out of maintaining an appropriate inventory of printing supplies.
