With the growing popularity and plummeting prices of digital cameras, HP has introduced a new industry standard `PictBridge` on select cameras, printers and MFPs. This technology enables a range of digital photo solutions, including the direct printing of photos from a digital camera without the use of a PC.
Says Drikus van der Walt, product manager at Tarsus Technologies: "Making high quality prints from digital camera images has never been easier. With the easily recognisable PictBridge logo clearly displayed on all compliant devices, users are guaranteed that their device will work with other PictBridge enabled cameras and printers.
"HP`s Photosmart range of digital cameras, the All-in-One PSC 1310, 1600 and 2350 series, as well as the range of HP Officejet 6200, 7200, 7300 and 7400 series printers are PictBridge compliant. Both the digital cameras and printers communicate via the PictBridge port on the devices," says Van der Walt.
"The devices support a set of specifications according to the PictBridge standard. However, support for options such as paper types and sizes, page layout, and other features vary widely among digital cameras. Specific support for features is determined by the camera`s manufacturer."
Van der Walt explains how these features are integrated: "When you connect your PictBridge camera to your PictBridge printer using the PictBridge cable, the camera and printer exchange information so that each knows what the other is capable of. Once this has happened, you can view and choose the desired pictures for printing on your camera`s display and then initiate the print job straight from your camera."
There are currently other similar but non-interoperable standards around; however, PictBridge aims to provide a standard that will be integrated by a wide variety of manufacturers making it easy and beneficial for the user.
