VERITAS Software Corporation has announced a new version of VERITAS NetBackup Storage Migrator, a hierarchical storage management (HSM) solution that reduces storage overhead and streamlines IT operations by allowing the transparent movement of infrequently accessed files to more cost-effective storage media.
The new version offers improved integration with VERITAS Software data protection, storage management and high availability software products, allowing companies to more efficiently manage storage growth and resources, while protecting and ensuring the availability of critical business information.
Additionally, the new software solution has enhanced reporting capabilities to monitor data movement and wizard-driven menus to simplify use.
Gartner Dataquest has found that online disk storage is utilised approximately 20% to 50% of the time, with the remaining storage capacity reserved to ensure free space for users and applications. VERITAS NetBackup Storage Migrator optimises disk utilisation by monitoring available disk space and automatically migrating data from disk to tape as needed to maintain a desired amount of free storage space.
According to Sheldon Hand, sales engineer: Middle East and Africa at VERITAS Software, the new Storage Migrator offers enhanced administration capabilities, including advanced reporting capabilities that enable users to track storage usage and bottleneck trends, and wizard-driven configurations, including a new Oracle Archived Redo Log for improved reliability and recovery of Oracle databases.

A new management console plug-in for VERITAS NetBackup, centralises the administration of data protection, disaster recovery and storage management. The new HSM offering also provides enhanced levels of integration with VERITAS Software clustering, appliance, file system, and SAN software products.
