New York toll increases delay projects
The delayed projects include the redevelopment of the Central Terminal Building at La Guardia Airport and Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport, and the construction of a bus garage at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, according to a spokesman for the agency.
The 10-year capital plan, which includes completing construction of the World Trade Centre, now stands at $25.1 billion.
The Philadelphia Inquirer says board members of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey voted to gradually raise tolls at tunnels and bridges for cars without an E-ZPass electronic payment device from $8 to $15 in 2015.
The agency's original plan - which the governors of New York and New Jersey threatened to veto - would have more than doubled the toll for a car without E-ZPass from $8 to $17 by 2014. The first round of increases takes effect 18 September this year.
Reuters states that the Port Authority needs the toll and fare hikes to fund its 10-year, $33 billion capital plan. The governors say that the Port Authority, in a review they demanded, had come up with $5 billion of savings.
