Next Generation Networks under spotlight

Johannesburg, 22 Apr 2004

A number of industry experts will be discussing the converged Next Generation Networks (NGN) development at an IT business forum in May.

Marconi Communications technical director George Debbo and Siemens Telecommunications CEO Pete Da Silva will be among the speakers at Futurex 2004: The conference

The idea behind the NGN, a single platform device that enables voice, and multi-media services, was originally conceived between the late 1990`s and early 2000`s, says Debbo.

In his presentation, Debbo says he will look at the current status of NGNs in the market. "It is a fascinating area, because it changes nearly every month."

Debbo will also look at how NGNs have changed over the years by providing a comparison between the current and original concept and idea. "I won`t be focusing on the technical side as much as the business side," he adds.

Speaking of the telecommunications industry, Debbo says certain market factors have left it in a negative state: "The industry is now facing one of the lowest market depressions in its recorded history." Debbo attributes this to the over-commitment made by European operators purchasing 3G mobile licenses, as well as the capital expenditure over-commitments made by numerous new competitive operators in the US.

Da Silva, who will be giving the welcome address on day three - 20 May, will provide a general overview of the new telecommunications landscape. He will cover next generation technology, IP technology, and various other factors `enabling mobile life`.

The Futurex Conference, hosted by ITWeb, will run alongside the Futurex Exhibition at the Sandton Convention Centre between 18 and 20 May.
