Next generation of cellular at Vodaworld this week

Johannesburg, 26 Aug 2004

An expected 20 000 visitors will be offered futuristic glimpses into the world of cellular during this week`s Vodacom Techno Expo 2004.

Taking place at the world`s only dedicated cellular lifestyle complex, Vodaworld in Midrand, the Vodacom Techno Expo 2004 will be open free to the public from Friday, 27 August until Sunday, 29 August 2004.

The expo will be the first occasion that anyone outside of the cellular industry and the media will see 3G practically demonstrated in SA.

Visitors to the Vodacom stand will be able to see at selected times how it is possible to view channels such as CNN, Sky News or BBC World on a 3G cellphone. Vodacom will also show how video calls can be made on 3G handsets, which come equipped with two cameras: one facing towards the user and one facing away from the user. This enables 3G users to see the people they are talking to and the scenery around them.

Besides real-time technology, real life celebrities and sports stars making appearances at the Vodacom stand include the "Yebo Gogo" superstars, Michael de Pinna and Bankole Omotoso, as well as players from Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and the Blue Bulls.

Some 29 other exhibitors will be displaying and demonstrating the latest cellular handsets, applications and accessories. Companies to be seen at the expo include Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Exactmobile, I-Touch, Nashua Mobile, Siemens and LG.

A highlight of the Vodacom Techno Expo 2004 will be the Sony Ericsson robotic dog. Robi One Kenobi is a fully autonomous, computerised canine. He has lasers for eyes, a colour camera, sensor pads, and other features that allow him to function in a manner similar to that of a real dog.

The expo is a celebration of the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), the cellular technology used in SA and more than 110 countries worldwide.

"No other mobile technology has proved as versatile and allowed for the development of so many applications as GSM," said Mthobi Tyamzashe, Group Executive - Corporate Affairs of Vodacom Group.

The expo opens at 09h30 and closes at 18h30, every day. Entrance is free and all visitors will receive a free t-shirt while stocks last.

Directions to Vodaworld: Signs direct visitors from the New Road off-ramp on the N1 highway (South and North).
