Nine infosec professionals certified by NextGen

Johannesburg, 06 Oct 2006

NextGen Training Solutions (Pty) Ltd (www.nextgen.co.za), a South African-based training organisation focusing on information security and technical training, has successfully conducted a course on IT vulnerability assessment in partnership with Secure Matrix India.

The course, titled "Certified Vulnerability Assessor (cVa)", is a proprietary information security course by Secure Matrix of India and accredited by Norway-based DNV, a global certification agency. In this first programme in the South African region, nine South African nationals were certified.

NextGen`s security consulting arm, which focuses on managed security services and consulting services, has become a pioneer in introducing this programme in South Africa.

The cVa training programme, one of its kind globally, trains assessors on many information security processes under the ISO/IEC 17799 / ISO/IEC 27001standards and IT vulnerability assessment. The training programme for the first time in South Africa was of techno-managerial nature.

"The training programme is needed to ensure business continuity and disaster management and preventing and minimising the threats and security incidents in the companies. The programme not only stresses on security controls and processes but also on aligning policies to the needs of the businesses today and maximising returns on investment," said Sumit Garg from NextGen.

ML Srinivasan, Technical Director and CTO, Secure Matrix and also the Lead Trainer for the CVA programme, said internal attacks to IT systems are more than those from outside, adding unauthorised access by authorised users outweighed the problem of external hacking. He also cited the industry research indicating that over 65% of all reported security breaches occurred within the network. Thus, control over servers was getting far more critical.

Security certifications will be vital in coming days while companies will be hiring professionals in South Africa. "There is a need of these kind of certification programmes where an international agency is certifying professionals on vendor-independent security technologies and processes. This will not only raise the standard of the information security practice but will also assist more and more individuals going through a set qualification path in SA" said Garg.

Nine professionals who got certified are Silas Mohale, Mninikhaya Qwabaza, Maritz Van Jaarsveldt from SizwentSaluba Vsp, David Auku from Station IT, Mdu Simelane from KZN Wildlife, Steve Smith from Eskom, Craig Rosewarne from ISG, SA, Arshaad Smile and Jaco Pretorius from Absa.

The next training programme is scheduled for November 2006 and professionals can get in touch with NextGen Training Solutions (Pty) Ltd for more information.
