No strain in Spain for Cayenne

Johannesburg, 20 Jul 1998

Cayenne Software has announced that one of Spain`s largest public service utilities has selected the company`s tools for business modelling, database development, and object modelling to design a new customer service application.

A public utility service for over 80 years, Union Fenosa is one of the 15 largest companies in Spain and the second largest private electrical enterprise in the country, employing more than 7 000 people.

Union Fenosa is using Cayenne`s complete software development lifecycle product line, including ObjectTeam for object modelling and BusinessTeam for data modelling. Cayenne`s new lifecycle approach to software development emphasises the co-existence of the two modelling techniques, allowing customers such as Union Fenosa to leverage their existing data and systems while implementing new and complex systems.

Traditional operations such as account set-up, billing, payment processing and account management are mission-critical processes to a company whose customer service provides the major differentiation from its competitors.

With Model Manager, Cayenne`s active tool repository, Cayenne is providing Union Fenosa`s 300 developers, working from different locations, with realtime, concurrent collaboration on software models - allowing team members to share files while bypassing the time-consuming and often repetitive effort of splitting and merging models. Therefore, engineers can significantly speed up the development of the customer service application.

In addition, Cayenne`s ObjectTeam and BusinessTeam provide the depth and flexibility necessary to support the highly diverse and heterogeneous development environments at Union Fenosa. The utility has a complex IT infrastructure made up of Windows 95, Windows NT, Unix and MVS platforms; PowerBuilder, C/C++, Natural and Java programming languages; Adabas, Oracle, Informix and Sybase databases; and structured and object-oriented development methodologies.

"Cayenne`s solution was the best overall in the market, and we were particularly impressed with the products` ability to support our heavily invested legacy data with reengineering capabilities," says Miguel Angel Vila Grandoso, development technologies manager at Union Fenosa. "It would have been a nightmare for our organisation to even attempt migrating data from older to newer database architectures with any other products."

During its extensive search, Union Fenosa evaluated Rational Rose, Popkin System Architect, Platinum Paradigm Plus and Select Enterprise object modelling tools; Sybase PowerDesigner and Logic Works ERwin database modelling and design tools. Ultimately, Union Fenosa chose Cayenne`s complete product line for its ability to transform business knowledge into mission-critical systems.

"Cayenne offered a complete solution for developing the applications that will meet our company`s goals," says Vila Grandoso.

"Organisations working in complex, heterogeneous environments need solutions that will support all developers and development efforts regardless of existing database architectures or software development methodologies," says Michael Jannery, VP marketing at Cayenne Software. "Union Fenosa`s use of our product line for the development of their mission-critical customer service application underlines the benefits of the collaboration and co-existence themes around which our technologies are designed."

* Cayenne Software is represented in South Africa by Software Futures, a company in the Computer Configurations Holdings group.
