The National Year 2000 Decision Support Centre says it had no reports of South African Y2K glitches directly after the date rollover.

Feriel Bowers of the Centre says none of the six crucial sectors monitored reported Y2K-related interruptions.

"We are heartened by the positive reports thus far from critical sectors and essential services," Bowers says.

The six sectors are transport, health and services, telecommunications, finance, , and electricity.

The sector Y2K response centre said initial reports indicate ATMs and card services are not affected by Y2K.

Major hospitals and clinics reported no Y2K problems and are operating normally, according to the Department of Health.

Telecommunications and Transportation sectors, as well as Water and electricity utilities reported no Y2K problems.

The Department of Agriculture said initial reports indicated no interruptions or problems with Y2K at this stage.

The South African Post Office reported no Y2K problems.

The Y2K Centre will continue to monitor critical sectors and provide a full report before sunrise.
