Nokia today announced the Nokia Lumia 625, its biggest phone to date, featuring an 11.9cm screen and 4G Internet access.

The Windows Phone 8 model keeps the same screen resolution as the Lumia 620, but features better processing power with dual-core Snapdragon S4, 512MB RAM and 8GB storage with support for up to 64GB SD card.

Furthermore, the phone hosts LTE connectivity, a 5MP main camera, a VGA front-facing camera, and a 2000mAh battery.

The LCD screen features sunlight readability enhancement, as well as super-sensitive touch technology for operation with gloves or nails. Customisation options include orange, green, yellow, white and black cases, and it is set to ship in the third quarter for around EUR220.

Product manager Vinay Jayakumar was quoted on Nokia's official blog as saying super-fast Internet brings a real demand for big screens. "This is where the Nokia Lumia 625 arrives with a really competitive price to match."

Jayakumar says the design of the phone is the element that he is most proud of. "Rounded surfaces all over - even down to the edges of the glass - give the phone an organic feel like a smooth pebble."

Nokia last week showed faltering handset sales with total units shipped dropping by 27% in the second quarter of the year.

CEO Stephen Elop was quoted as saying the mobile device unit plans to take action to focus its product offering and improve product competitiveness.

"Overall, Lumia volumes grew to 7.4 million in the second quarter, the highest for any quarter so far and showing increasing momentum for the ecosystem. During the third quarter, we expect that our new Lumia products will drive a significant part of our smart devices revenue," said Elop.
