Nokia`s first imaging phone marks start of multimedia messaging era

Featuring an inbuilt-camera, a radically enhanced user interface and large colour display, the Nokia 7650 opens up new perspectives in personal communications.

RF Group, South African importer of Nokia cellphones, today introduced a new imaging phone to its mobile phone portfolio with the launch of the Nokia 7650.

Combining a digital camera and multimedia messaging (MMS) functionality, the phone is ideally suited for people who want to capture and share moments spontaneously. Advanced business features also make it a value-adding tool for the work environment. The Nokia 7650 will be available in SA from early September 2002.

"The launch of the 7650 camera-phone signifies a remarkable breakthrough in communications," according to a Nokia spokesman. "History has proven that advances in the way we communicate do give rise to entirely new communication cultures. Much like the transition from radio to TV, the evolution from text messaging to multimedia messaging marks a new era of mobile communications. We`re now combining images with sound and text. By the end of 2002, we expect more than half of all Nokia handsets will be MMS capable, and in 2003, MMS will be an integral feature in all new Nokia phones," he said.

The imaging functionalities of the Nokia 7650 include an integrated digital camera with a VGA resolution, picture taking and sending, a photo album for storing pictures, and a large 176x208 pixel colour display. The MMS works much the same way as SMS messages, but allows users to combine audio-, graphic-, text- and imaging content in one message. Once the user has selected a picture, written a text, and included an audio clip, the multimedia message can be sent directly to another multimedia messaging capable terminal as well as to the recipient`s e-mail address. The advanced graphical user interface and joystick with five-way navigation add ease and speed to the use of this new mobile device.

The Nokia 7650 delivers a full range of functions for professional needs in the EGSM900/1800 environment. These include GPRS and HSCSD connections, WAP, wireless Bluetooth and infrared connectivity, e-mail and MIDP Java support. The handsfree speaker and voice dialling capability increase convenience on the move. The Symbian Operating System (OS) allows the phone to be customised and upgraded by corporations and individual users, who will be able to purchase numerous add-on software applications designed by independent software developers. A software development kit (SDK) is available for the Nokia 7650.

With its 750 mAh Li-Ion battery, the Nokia 7650 has a talktime of two to four hours and a standby time of four to ten days. The Nokia 7650 weighs 154 grams, and has a large dynamic memory for storing images and add-on applications, such as contact information with pictures, messages, calendar notes and to-do lists. The phone will also support a variety of optional accessories for power management, wearables and wireless Bluetooth connectivity.

Nokia has been pioneering the messaging market since its early days and has introduced a variety of industry-first messaging solutions and applications, such as ring tones, picture messages, wireless imaging, and logos.
