Notebooks to take quarter of PC market in 2000 says Tarsus` Whitcroft

Johannesburg, 21 Sep 2000

Increasingly mobile workforces are selecting notebooks as the PC of choice says Guy Whitcroft, managing director of . "A recent report from market watcher , an LCD market analyst has confirmed that notebooks are capturing an ever larger slice of the PC market share," says Whitcroft. He notes that portables will take for almost 25% of worldwide market share in 2000, an increase of 31.5% over 1999.

According to the report, some 24.4 million laptops will ship in 2000. The total number of PCs to be shipped this year is estimated to be in the region of 100 million units.

"Interestingly, trends indicate that notebook buyers are opting for the largest possible screen sizes, challenging notebook-makers to provide compact machines without a compromise on visual real-estate," says Whitcroft. During the second quarter of this year, notebooks with a 14.1in or larger LCD accounted for 54 per cent of display shipments, up 26.1 per cent on the same period last year. BY Q2 2002, it is projected that models with this configuration will account for 64.9 per cent of the market.

New, hi-res XGA screens captured 2.7 per cent of the market during the second quarter, up from negligible shipments in the first. DisplaySearch predicts a 26 per cent share of the notebook market for these displays by 2002.

Tarsus Technologies stocks a range of notebooks from IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Compaq, with specifications and screen sizes to suit every business requirement.
