People or companies that need a laptop should buy now because laptops are currently at the lowest level in two years - but prices are expected to rise by at least 10% within three months.
This is according to Christopher Riley, CEO of The Notebook Company (www.notebook.co.za). "The main reason for the imminent rise in prices, I believe, is because the rand will definitely lose value within the next three months.
"We are almost certainly going to see the interest rate come down and, as the rate comes down, the rand is going to lose value as offshore investors will not be able earn high returns on rand investments due to the decreased rate."
Riley said that while the stronger rand has influenced the price of laptops, the fact that more are now being produced means that "economies of scale have kicked in", leading to a reduction in prices.
"Laptops are becoming increasingly vital in today`s mobile economy. Desktops remain important, but people will often opt for a laptop rather than a desktop because it can serve both functions."
