NT network conversion ensures Year 2000 compliance for Germiston Public Safety

Johannesburg, 30 Nov 1999

The Greater Germiston Council`s Directorate of Public Safety has enlisted EasiRun Software as it gears up for the year 2000, switching to NT to ensure that the range of services it offers will escape the millennium bug.

Director Bennie van Rooyen says the Directorate implemented a wide-area network in 1990, but was warned by the hardware supplier that its file server was not year 2000 compliant. In addition, the age of the system along with the unavailability of parts and components meant that the supplier would not upgrade the equipment to ensure .

The file server and 40 linked terminals play a mission-critical role in the Directorate`s services, handling a range of functions, including:

  • Traffic contravention system, which entails capturing of cases, court bookings, and representations.

  • Electronic mail book, which controls all e-mail sent and received.

  • Productivity system, which includes, among other functions, capturing weekly returns and generation of productivity reports for management.

  • Warrant of arrest allocation system, for administration of all warrants issued, received and printed.

  • Summons administration, controlling summonses issued, payments and so on.

"The Directorate - in consultation with the Council`s computer division - decided to switch to an NT system because it is the preferred platform for applications the Directorate uses. In addition, the move to NT provides integration with the 107-centre and Trafman accident monitoring system the Directorate uses," says Van Rooyen.

Long-term plans include converting the Trafman package to NT, further boosting system productivity and cost-effectiveness.

"EasiRun was selected for the NT project because it has developed a range of systems for the department, including its productivity system, warrant of arrest allocation system and Section 54 Summonses allocation system," adds Van Rooyen.

"EasiRun was responsible for maintenance of these functions on the previous system and will continue to provide maintenance following the NT switch."

The project was carried out in six days, completed without any disruption to productivity or output.

"The Directorate was impressed with the manner in which the transfer process was handled and finalised, as well as with EasiRun`s professional approach to the project," concludes Van Rooyen.
