North-West premier Edna Molewa has launched the province`s first Batho Pele electronic gateway at the Lebotlwane village, to give the rural community electronic access to government services.
The electronic gateway will give Lebotlwane citizens direct access to information concerning applications for social grants, birth certificates and identity documents.
Molewa said in opening the e-gateway at the Leretlhabetse Multi-Purpose Community Centre: "The launch is part of the provincial reconstruction and development plan in ensuring that government services are easily accessible, particularly for people staying in rural areas."
According to Russel Mamabolo, manager for media relations for Molewa: "The Lerethlabetse Multi-Purpose Centre was built in 2002. The centre initially had computers, but the software for government services was not available. We have installed a lot of software to upgrade the facilities and to enable the public to have access to it."
The gateway service will also create employment for residents. Community development workers are being trained and will be deployed across the area to help people to access the gateway service.
Molewa emphasised the need to improve the quality of service for those living in rural areas. "The North-West Province is largely rural, and there is a greater need for us to pay serious attention to improve service delivery in the area."
