Communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with his Cuban counterpart, Ramiro Valdes Menendez, that will see the countries share ICT expertise.
Nyanda has been in Cuba since the middle of last week, meeting with several ministers in the country. The new MOU is essentially an extension of a cooperation agreement signed between the countries in 2001 and will cover six strategic areas in ICT.
According to the Department of Communications (DOC), the primary focus of sharing will be in software design and development, training and development of personnel in the ICT fields and manufacturing of ICT equipment for computing and telecommunications.
“In their discussion, the two ministers acknowledged the importance of harnessing ICT for social and economic development. The ministers agreed to implement the cooperation agreement on mutually beneficial terms for the people of both nations,” the DOC explained in a statement.
The department says Cuba is well known for producing talented software developers and technicians, and Nyanda hopes to take some of the expertise to create the same situation in SA.
