Athletes and visitors to the Athens Olympic Games will be able to read about the games and news from home in their favourite home newspapers, courtesy of Oc'e Digital Newspaper Network (DNN).
Several international newspapers have enlisted Oc'e DNN, the world leader in digital short-run printing, to print daily issues from a unique digital production site being set up in Athens.
Oc'e DNN has teamed up with print and distribution partners in Greece to establish the site, which will allow thousands of copies of foreign newspapers to be available much earlier than usual in Olympic venues throughout the Games, which take place from 13 to 29 August.
The demand from publishers to open this new market is expected to be phenomenal, according to Tim Venediger, who heads up Oc'e DNN.
"There has been a huge amount of interest in what we are planning to do even before we have officially unveiled details of our plans," said Venediger. "The word has started to spread extremely quickly because the publishers know that we would win a gold medal every time for the speed in which we get quality digital-produced newspapers-looking and feeling exactly like the originals-to the readers in Athens."
The growing reputation and expertise of Oc'e was a key reason why publishers contacted the digital printing pioneer to request the Athens printing service during the Games. Pages will be designed in the publishers` own countries and then sent by PDF across the Web and be ready for printing within minutes of final editorial sign-off.
"The athletes and the other visitors to the Olympic Games will be wanting to keep up with their news back home, and this will be the ideal way to do this," said Venediger. "The availability of the newspapers in Athens is certain to increase subscriber demand for the titles."
