Parents can apply now for placement for the 2018 academic year.
Parents can apply now for placement for the 2018 academic year.

Parents and guardians who missed the12 June deadline for online registration of learners going to grades one and eight next year have until 10 November to submit late applications.

This is according to the Gauteng Department of (GDE), which says it has re-opened its online admissions Web site for late applicants. The new applications will be processed in January 2018.

The GDE first introduced the admissions site last year to enable parents to apply online for the 2017 academic year. On its debut, the site crashed and was beset with technical glitches for some time during the application process, leaving many parents frustrated and unable to make online admissions for their children.

Despite the hiccups, the department was able to place the majority of the learners for the 2017 academic year. It was also able to minimise long queues at schools, which was the motivation for introducing an online school registration process.

In May, the GDE's online admissions site for the 2018 academic class was switched on.

The department says the system is running smoothly and parents who missed the May application period can apply online.

Those parents whose children are yet to be placed should visit the district office for placement. These parents need not apply as their details are already on the system, says MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

"The department has plans to ensure all applicants that applied on time are placed. We cannot thank enough the people of Gauteng for their overwhelming response to our call to utilise the online application system. Parents that have already applied and are awaiting placement must not re-apply. These parents must approach district offices for assistance."

According to the GDE, a total number of 285 834 learners needed placement in Gauteng schools. To date, a total of 222 378 applicants have been placed. This figure is a sum total of 123 450 for grade one and 98 928 for grade eight learners, it adds.
