Online on the beach

Johannesburg, 07 Dec 2004

Tech junkies at Clifton`s 4th beach in Cape Town will be able to enjoy connectivity along with their surf, sand and fun this month.

Following an initiative by Intel, Mecer, the Airports Company of South Africa and Solutions (IS), beach visitors will be able to surf the Internet, download e-mails or send holiday greetings and pictures to friends and family, says IS mobile solutions GM Richard Vester.

"With so many people heading to the beaches for the festive season, any person who has a wireless card in their laptop will be able to access the Clifton hotspot. This project is part of our ongoing commitment to extend corporate networks beyond bricks and mortar and add value to our current users` portfolios."

For those who did not think to bring a laptop with wireless capability to the beach, a number of notebooks will be available to the public, along with staff to assist those who are less technologically inclined.

The wireless hotspot will run from 16 December to 8 January.

"Also on view will be a wireless computer-equipped surfboard, which allows the user to surf the Net as well as the waves. The surfboard contains a tablet PC sealed in a watertight plastic shell and a solar-powered battery charger, says Intel marketing communication manager Delia Griggs.

While the concept of a computerised surfboard may seem a little extreme to some, it does highlight what is possible."
