OpenView Universe goes into orbit

Hewlett-Packard`s OpenView Universe and Symposium kicked off yesterday in Berlin, boasting 1 500 attendees, double that of last year`s Paris event.

Features of the conference include the announcement of the OpenView Authorised Partner of the Year award - scooped up by Dimension for both the South African and Swedish regions.

One of the major themes of the conference promises to be HP`s delivery of its e-services vision, and how the software division will be involved in delivery of the e-services architecture.

"We are changing our software strategy to support e-services," comments Bill Russell, VP of the software and solutions organisation and VP of HP. "[E-services represents] the first time we have had a single strategy - it has impacted every division of HP."

Russell defines e-services as "what happens after e-commerce and e-business. Take any asset that you have in your company that you can digitise and turn it into a service." Russell says that about half of the online retailers currently already run their systems on HP infrastructure.

HP software is planning on divesting certain projects, while increasing investment in other key areas. Russell says major focuses in the future will include support for multiple operating systems, security, emerging business solutions, and the OpenView management software.

The company hopes to compete with the likes of BEA and IBM for the Internet software infrastructure market following the recent acquisition of Bluestone, which it hopes will offer it integration capabilities.

Mobile management is also expected to prove an important conference topic, with HP planning management and monitoring agents for the mobile device market. Linked to this will be service provider offerings from OpenView, particularly in the convergence market.
