Opera 6

for Windows was released today following more than half-a-million downloads of the beta version released two weeks ago. The Oslo-based browser maker also released a technology preview version of Opera 6 for the Linux operating system earlier this week, making the company a significant competitor in the ongoing browser wars. The previous version of the Opera browser, version 5, was downloaded more than 6 million times.

Dean Kakridas, VP for Desktop Products at Opera Software ASA, says that among the many changes the company has implemented, Opera 6 for Windows now also offers users a single document interface as well as the more traditional multiple document interface Opera users have become accustomed to.

Kakridas says other changes include significant speed improvements as well as improved memory utilisation. The user interface also includes many new features including new start-up dialogs, a new main bar as well as integrated skins and panels to offer added personalisation. A number of new keyboard shortcuts have been added as well as the option to run multiple instances of Opera on one machine, allowing different users of the same machine to have personalised copies of the browser.

The free version of Opera 6 includes sponsored advertisements but users who want an ad-free copy will have to register their copy.

Earlier this week Opera also released a technology preview version (version 1) of Opera 6 for the Linux operating system. The Linux version of Opera 6 includes all of the features offered on the Windows platform as well as cookie management options that are exclusive to the Linux version. The Linux version also includes additional mouse click options specific to Linux.

Both versions of Opera 6 include support for 128-bit encryption, XML, HTML 4.01, HTTP 1.1, Javascript 1.3 and WML.
