Opera unveils TV app store

Opera Software is introducing the Opera TV Store, a solution for developers to build HTML5 apps for connected TVs and devices, reports Broadband TV News.

Original equipment manufacturers, on the other hand, can take advantage of these ready-made apps and offer them to their customers.

“Apps are a new must-have on TVs,” says Frode Hernes, VP products, TV and connected devices, Opera Software, in a statement. “With the Opera TV Store, developers can easily build cool and useful apps for millions of TV viewers. And, yet again, Opera takes these apps across devices, bringing games, news, video and audio apps to TVs, set-top boxes and Blu-ray players.”

For developers, the Opera TV Store means a quick and easy way to reach millions of users right in their own living rooms, says Jakarta Globe.

If a TV is based on Opera SDK 3.1, the Opera TV Store and its content are just a click away. An HTML5-based solution makes compatibility and app development quick and easy. Cloud-based storage of the users' apps will enable users to store and upgrade everything without having to own any additional hardware.

The Opera TV Emulator has the following innovative features, Web standards support, according to AppMarket.

Support for the full suite of Web standards, such as HTML5 with video, CSS, Canvas and SVG. Support for CE-HTML video, which lets developers test and debug applications that use CE-HTML video streams.

Speed emulation that allows content developers to choose one of four speed settings, which helps them evaluate the performance level of the TV. Virtual PC imaging which provides a quick process of installing and running the Linux-based SDK on a Windows or Mac PC and Opera Dragonfly debugging that helps developers debug TV applications on their PCs.
