Smartphone brand Oppo last night unveiled its latest flagship phone: the Find N2 Flip, its first foldable smartphone to be launched in South Africa.
The brand also announced its partnership with local fashion designer Rich Mnisi, who will create limited-edition accessories that will be sold with the Find N2 Flip for some consumers.
The launch comes as rival smartphone manufacturers Samsung and Huawei ramp up the rollout of foldable devices.
Speaking after the launch, Liam Faurie, head of operations and go-to-market for Oppo SA, told ITWeb that stock of the new devices landed earlier this week, and have already started moving into warehouses.
Some stores might even have the device from today, he indicated. “The folding and flipping market is seen as the future of the smartphone. It’s important as Oppo to show our capability, our technological breakthroughs that we are able to do with this product.
“For us…this is the first Find [N series] product that comes to South African shores.”
Founded in 2004, Oppo is a subsidiary of Chinese multinational conglomerate BBK Electronics, which also owns the Vivo and OnePlus brands.
The Oppo brand launched in SA at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has brought to market its Reno8 series, the Reno7 Z 5G, the A-series smartphone range, and now the Find N2 Flip.
Since becoming available in the country, the brand has attracted more than 700 000 South African users, according to Faurie. “We believe the Oppo user is creative and youthful…but the Oppo target market is anyone that wants to make use of our devices.
“We want to expand our user-base in South Africa, but more importantly, we want to build a strong and sustainable company in South Africa.”
Weighing about 191g, the Find N2 Flip features a 6.8-inch display screen when open, and a 3.26-inch screen when folded.
The camera functionality is made up of a 50MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 32MP selfie-cam.
Other features include 4 300mAh battery power, fingerprint and facial recognition biometrics, dual SIM card that accepts Nano SIM, Android operating system, as well as 8GB RAM + 256GB ROM capacities.
The Find N2 Flip will be available in black or purple via partner network stores: Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C, starting from R1 199 per month.
Oppo expects cash retailers to start selling the device for about R29 999.
