Oracle announces new version of application server and development tools

Johannesburg, 02 Feb 2005

Oracle has unveiled its Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 featuring a host of competitive software development tools for Linux, Solaris, HP-UX and Windows platforms.

The product has been uploaded to Oracle Technology Network to provide software developers access to the new version. Linux developers in particular will welcome the new release from the benefits it offers and the fact that it is significantly cheaper than competitive development tools.

According to Francois Marais, principal consultant at Oracle South Africa, key aspects to the new release include features spanning areas such as business intelligence, J2EE/SOA, business integration enterprise portals, wireless and RFID, and identity management.

"Major improvements have been made in performance, scalability and particularly high availability and manageability with this release to further strengthen the ability to run enterprise applications on grid computing architectures," says Marais.

Oracle believes Application Server 10g Release 2 is the highest quality release that the company has ever delivered. Nearly 130 configurations of the product with over 6 500 tests per configuration were automatically set up on the ST-Grid and tested every day for the past year.

Significant improvements have been made in functional, integration, stress, performance, high availability and enterprise configuration testing. More than three million hours of testing in the product, and an increase of 30% in functional testing across the product in a single release.

Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 further strengthens the company`s competitive position. When Oracle Internet Application Server (iAS) began in mid 2001, it had less than 2.5% market share. Since then, Oracle has been the fastest growing application server vendor, growing licence revenues by nearly double digits in 11 of its last 12 quarters.
