Oracle University, in association with ISETT SETA, resellers and customers, has completed the first eight-month internship programme for unemployed BSc and BCom graduates.
The internship gave 83 graduates the opportunity to `top-up` their qualifications and improve their chances of finding jobs. The programme will also address the three areas where Oracle skills are urgently needed by enterprises: development in database administration, application development and Oracle Financials.
Dan Ellappa, Oracle University SA`s country manager, says the R150 000 project is jointly funded by Oracle customers, resellers and ISETT SETA.
"The ongoing problem in SA is that while there are graduates out there, companies are reluctant to employ them because they do not have the experience. Our aim is to top-up their skills to make them employable," he says.
BSc-Information Science, BCom and BTech graduates aged between 21 and 33 were selected from a shortlist of about 150 candidates. They were sourced from ISETT SETA`s database following an evaluation and assessment process held during an information workshop.
"Seventy percent of the programme is devoted to workplace-related projects and assignments which they learn at the 20 Oracle IT consulting partners and independent software vendors. Oracle University is the delivery arm for business and soft skills training," says Ellappa.
