Oracle9i Application Server experiences strong growth in EMEA

69% growth in Oracle`s fiscal year 2002 customer base over previous year
Johannesburg, 24 Feb 2003

Oracle Corp, the world`s largest enterprise software company, today announced that the continuing momentum behind Oracle9i Application Server has led to growth in both the product`s customer base and revenue growth in its fiscal year 2002 in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

During Oracle`s fiscal year ending May 2002, the Oracle9i Application Server customer base in EMEA grew more than 100%; and in the next six months following May 2002, Oracle added over 1 000 new EMEA Oracle9i Application Server customers. These figures do not include the 30% of current Oracle9i Application Server customers in the EMEA region who expanded existing Oracle9i Application Server deals.

The South African Provincial Government of Gauteng has implemented a housing wait-list management system using Oracle 9i Application Server. The system, developed using Oracle`s 9i Developer Suite, streamlines the process of allocating housing subsidies, eliminating duplicate applications and identifying people who do not qualify for subsidies. The system also enables the Department of Housing to identify where best to focus its resources.

"The ability to manage the data on the list is critical in ensuring that the people with the most need are helped. As importantly, we need to be able to use that data to plan our strategies better, such as identifying the biggest need and planning accordingly in terms of services, schools and transport," says Nilesh Singh, at the Department of Housing, Gauteng Provincial Government.

The system manages the data on the 500 000 people currently on the waiting lists in a centralised Oracle9i database. Initially, users at 43 local authorities will access the database over the province`s intranet, updating data, querying the list and adding new applications.

"The middleware market is very important for Oracle; our clear focus on this key growth opportunity is what has given us these growth figures," said Sergio Giacoletto, executive vice-president, Oracle EMEA. "Our competitors would have you believe that they have momentum, but the facts show that Oracle is growing the fastest and giving the current market leader a lot to think about. Both the public and private sector appreciate the great functionality, high performance and low cost of Oracle9i Application Server - for example, in the last quarter alone, we sold the product to 18 universities and 39 banks across the EMEA region."

In its fiscal half year ending November 2002, Oracle9i Application Server customers in EMEA included Nokia, Deutsche Post AG, STMicroelectronics, Printemps, Conseil G'en'eral de la Moselle, Swiss Post, Co-operative Group, Aeg'on Spain, Infomedics, BME Bundesverband Materialwirtschaft, Einkauf und Logistik e.V, Draeger Safety, Fiscus, Landeskriminalamt Bayern, Metro MGI Informatik GmbH (MGI), NEC Electronics Europe, Sinius, Municipality of Venice, Municipality of Milan, Toro Assicurazioni, Unisalute, Municpality of Turin, Mediaset and Fiditalia.

"The high volume of new EMEA customers for Oracle9i Application Server shows that Oracle is taking over as the middleware vendor of choice," said John McLevy, vice-president Enterprise Technology, Oracle EMEA. "The growth in our customer base in EMEA shows that companies now understand the merits of the Oracle product as the best and most complete middleware which can easily be integrated into their e-business stack. Many customers are buying the product on its own merits, not simply as a basis for running the Oracle E-Business Suite."
