Orca Technologies appoints Baby Orca distributor

Johannesburg, 18 Nov 1999

Orca Technologies has announced the appointment of its first distributor for the Baby Orca range of entry-level high capacity storage solutions. Square One, a distributor of colour printers and data storage and management solutions will distribute the range through some 100 resellers throughout South Africa.

The growth in the demand for data storage is underpinned by new technologies such as video and image storage, data warehousing, -based systems, and on-line business solutions. According to Square One`s new business manager Philip Wootton, the Baby Orca fulfils the need for an intelligent and scalable mass data storage solution for medium-sized businesses and at the departmental level of large enterprises.

"This is the first solution of its kind to market in that it is fibre-capable, has built in redundancy and can scale to 288 GB of storage," says Wootton. "With the demand for data storage growing at more than 60% per year, the opportunities are enormous, and we will provide intensive support and service to resellers - many of whom will have to educate entry-level customers about data management, throughput issues and connectivity options."

Orca national sales manager, Lennie Botha, says that Square One was chosen for its large reseller base, and also because of its presence in all major centres in South Africa. "We expect explosive demand for the Baby Orca.

Botha believes that Baby Orca will break into markets where fast, secure, high availability data storage has not been considered an option to date. "Because Baby Orca is locally manufactured and draws on the advanced established technology built into the Orca Enterprise range, companies will benefit from a highly affordable data storage solution with the best price/performance," says Botha.

"The open systems approach of the Orca means that it runs on a wide range of server platforms and network operating systems, giving companies a flexible storage solution. The Baby Orca is also the first stage in growing a business`s storage solution to the Orca Enterprise level. Because the Baby Orca is built from standard, high quality components, upgrading is cost effective."
