OSS delivers on demand

Evolution Systems will deliver affordable, on-demand managed services to its customers using open source software (OSS), reports Sys-Con India

The service, eSecure Web, uses OSS to eliminate the licensing overheads associated with using proprietary technology in product development. By doing so, Evolution is among software as a service providers such as Google and Amazon who have built successful business models on mature OSS technology.

Evolution Systems selected Sirius based upon their expertise with Squid, a popular open source proxying technology, coupled with the consultancy`s string of high profile wins in the UK local government and sectors.

IBM enables Web 2.0

The combination of Web 2.0 tools and open source communities are creating a perfect storm to enable new kinds of collaborations among businesses and their constituents.

IBM said it would make new technology contributions to the open source community to speed the adoption and growth of Web 2.0 technology among enterprises.

IBM`s newest contributions to the open source community are additional enhancements to the Eclipse Foundation`s Ajax Technology Framework (ATF) and the Mozilla Foundation. IBM plans to generate Ajax as part of the JSF Tools in the next release of IBM Rational Application Developer, which is slated to be available later this year.

Open source phone immanent

IT Pro reports that a dual mode phone which runs on the Linux operating system will be put on sale early next year by D-Link.

Better known as a maker of and network switching products, D-Link is making its first foray into GSM phones with the V-CLICK.

The V-CLICK will switch between WiFi and GSM or GPRS networks at the click of a button, says D-Link, and will be "unlocked", so users should be able to use it with any SIM card. What appears to distinguish it from other dual mode offers is its use of OSS. It supports the Opera Mobile browser for on the road web surfing, so is aimed clearly at users who want an alternative to Microsoft`s mobile vision.
