Sun Microsystems and the OSS through Java Initiative are enabling the rapid integration of applications into telemanagement solutions with the release of the OSS Common API (application programming interface) and Common Design Guidelines.
Adhering to the telecommunications industry's demands, the OSS Common API is designed to speed the deployment of new OSS (Operating Support System) and BSS (Business Support System) solutions, while laying the foundation for end-to-end solutions that deliver higher margin services and lower operating costs. Furthermore, the APIs are Java- and XML-based - directly supporting the agile business models adopted by today's telecommunications companies.
Significantly, comments Willem Coetsee, account sales manager: telecommunications at Sun Microsystems SA, the APIs eliminate one of the most vexing barriers to profitability - the need to create interfaces between multiple vendor applications.
"Now developers will be able to build function-rich applications that integrate rapidly into existing or new OSS and BSS systems, while interoperating easily with other components of these systems."
The release of the Common API and Design Guidelines is a very important step for the Initiative as it lays the foundation for all existing and future open standard interfaces, and serves as a pragmatic template to rapidly integrated OSS/J compatible applications. Leading telecommunication players such as Sun, BEA Ericsson, NEC, Nokia and Telcordia contributed to the OSS Common API and Guidelines.
Says Pat Roche, vice-president and general manager, Integrated Solution Engineering at Telcordia: "The establishment of an industry direction in structuring interfaces is strategically important to our clients and to us. We look forward to our continued participation in OSS through Java Initiative activities."
The Initiative's APIs adhere to Java Community Process (JCP) standards. For more on the API source code and other information, go to http://java.sun.com/products/oss.
