Ovi adds prepaid electricity app

Cellular giant Nokia SA has added the Powertime mobile app to its Ovi Store.

This is in a bid to bring the convenience of instant prepaid electricity meter top-up and tools for smarter power use to millions of Nokia customers in the country.

The Nokia Ovi Store currently boasts of over 40 000 apps; and mobile systems company, Powertime has unveiled a Nokia version of its instant prepaid electricity meter top-up app.

Powertime says the move follows the success of the mobile app releases on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.

“Nokia handset owners no longer have to envy iPhone, Android and Blackberry users their access to prepaid electricity purchase apps,” Powertime says.

Ereeza Ryland, Powertime's chief marketing officer, says this application runs on almost all Nokia phones. “But old low-end handsets won't be supported; it works down to Nokia 9800 handsets basically and, of course, non-GPRS-enabled phones can't work with the app.”

She explains that Powertime has grown in one year to being the second largest online prepaid electricity vendor and the number one mobile vendor in SA.

According to Ryland, the Nokia addition now makes the Powertime app available to all major mobile handsets in SA.

The app features Powertime's services, including the ability to securely buy tokens to recharge prepaid electricity meters and cellphone airtime across all networks with a credit card.

Ryland adds that the set up is quick, as there is no need of faxing of ID copies before being able to buy electricity.

In regards to , she explains that Powertime has the stringiest security and encryption protocols and uses a fully payment card industry-compliant credit card management system.

“Purchasing airtime is easier than using WIG menus from , or having to go to banking Web sites,” she adds.

Ryland also points out that the Powertime app also includes a set of tools to help South Africans better understand and manage their power use.

“Usage statistics and graphs detail electricity use and spend so customers can spot trends and better manage costs. Powertime's Virtual Meter provides an estimate of the electricity left on the meter and sends out low credit alarms, using SMS, to avoid customer completely running out of electricity.”
