PABX goes mobile

Johannesburg, 06 Apr 2001

In line with worldwide trends towards anywhere, anytime communications, Ericsson has launched a mobile extension to its popular MD110 PABX.

According to Rob Browne, Ericsson business development manager at Dimension Data Interactive Communications, this extension ensures any mobile phone can be treated as an extension of the main office communications system.

"This is a significant step in integrating mobile users into the corporate network. It will allow for more efficient and flexible working for business users and switchboard operators, and will give a company`s customers better service."

Using this extension, mobile business users can direct all calls received via the office PABX to their mobile number, arrange call back on busy extensions and even make conference calls. A special feature, the Call Originator Indication, allows users to see the caller`s number displayed on their screen, giving them the ability to re-dial if a call has been missed or rejected.

"Mobile users will also receive more effective support from the switchboard operator. With the mobile extension, the operator can put the caller on hold and switch the call through when the mobile user becomes available. The operator will receive a 30 second reminder if the call has not gone through in exactly the same way as for other fixed line office extensions," he adds.

Security is build into the mobile extension to prevent misuse of the system. The MD110 will automatically recognise the mobile user and the pin code. If someone else tries to use the phone to access the enterprise communications network, entry will be denied.

"This mobile extension is more than a tool providing flexibility, efficiency and value for money. It represents a further development towards migrating businesses into the next generation of enterprise communications," Browne concludes.
