Packeteer WAN optimisation solutions achieve `Avaya compliant` rating

Johannesburg, 16 Jan 2006

IT Wise, the Sub-Saharan distributor for Packeteer, today announced that the latter`s PacketShaper appliance family is compliant with key SIP-based Internet Protocol (IP) telephony solutions from Avaya, a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services.

Packeteer`s compliance with Avaya`s IP telephony solutions enables its PacketShaper appliances to manage all IP telephony traffic to ensure the highest quality end-to-end communication on a per-call basis, resulting in predictable call quality comparable to a TDM environment. The PacketShaper family of appliances are now compliance-tested by Avaya for compatibility with Avaya S8710 Media Server, Avaya G650 Media Gateway, Avaya Converged Communication Server, and Avaya H.323 and SIP IP phones.

"Packeteer`s powerful monitoring and control features help us provide our customers with consistent call quality and application performance in a converged environment," commented Dean Maire, Senior VP of Partner Development at MTM Technologies, a leading national provider of Avaya IP Telephony and Packeteer WAN Optimisation solutions and services. "With our clients` strong migration towards IP telephony, they demand that their calls have the same level of quality and predictability as they did with their traditional TDM systems. By thoroughly testing and assuring interoperability, Packeteer and Avaya enable us to bring a world-class IP telephony solution to our customers."

Packeteer is a premier member of the Avaya DeveloperConnection Programme, an initiative to develop, market and sell innovative third-party products that interoperate with Avaya technology and extend the value of a company`s investment in its network. As a member of the programme, Packeteer is eligible to submit products for compatibility testing by the Avaya Solution Interoperability and Test Lab in Lincroft, New Jersey.

There, a team of Avaya engineers develops a comprehensive test plan for each application to verify whether it is Avaya compliant. Doing so ensures businesses can confidently add best-in-breed capabilities to their network without having to replace their existing infrastructure-speeding deployment of new applications and reducing both network complexity and implementation costs.

"By offering compliance testing to the many innovative companies such as Packeteer who are members of our DeveloperConnection programme, Avaya promotes interoperable solutions that are easier and more cost-effective for companies to implement within their existing, multi-vendor networks," added Eric Rossman, vice-president, Developer Relations and Technical Alliances, Avaya. "That means that together we`re expanding the options businesses have for solving their most complex challenges and are helping them derive greater value from their communications infrastructure.

"As enterprises migrate to IP telephony, they have concerns about the performance of voice calls which will share the same network with hundreds of other applications," continued Ajmal Noorani, vice-president of business development with Packeteer. "Ensuring call quality is a top priority for enterprise customers. Packeteer delivers the monitoring and guaranteed network performance for IP telephony traffic, allowing organisations to move to fully converged networks with confidence."
