Palm axes Foleo

Palm has axed its soon-to-be-shipping Foleo mobile companion device, reports Daily Tech.

CEO Ed Colligan attributes the cancellation of the Foleo to Palm's two-platform strategy that would cost more money in the long run. Palm has since decided to focus on a single next-generation platform for its smartphones.

Palm will take a $10 million hit to its earnings due to the cancellation of the Foleo, but it is a small cost compared to what supporting two platforms would cost the company, Colligan said.

Facebook adds search engines

The news that Facebook will make its member list available to search engines is sure to send a shudder of fear through its users, reports the Telegraph.

In the coming weeks, anyone, even those without a Facebook account, will not only be able to search for friends via the Facebook homepage, but also through popular search engines, such as Yahoo and Google.

While Facebook insists these public listings will include only names and profile pictures, some members fear it is the beginning of a slippery slope.

Microsoft unveils Silverlight

Microsoft released its Silverlight multimedia player, on schedule, this week, but threw in an unexpected twist: a collaboration deal with Novell to work on a Silverlight implementation that will run on Linux, reports CRN.

Novell's Mono team is already at work on a Silverlight implementation, dubbed "Moonlight". While Microsoft executives had given the project their tacit support, they have now upped their commitment and will formally collaborate with Novell on the initiative.

The move reverses Microsoft's earlier position that desktop Linux did not have a market share to justify devoting resources to porting Silverlight.
