For every cappuccino-sipping businessperson huddled behind sleek laptops in coffee shops, there is an army of people working on an industrial scale. Within warehouses, manufacturing operations, refineries and other harsh environments, computing power is keeping the wheels of industry turning in unforgiving conditions.
A production line is no place for a brushed aluminium case, and the Panasonic Toughpad is the first fully ruggedised, shock and spill resistant tablet designed to be up to these jobs. Powered by Android, Toughpad has been made available in SA by PanSolutions, and is suitable for a range of industrial-strength applications.
The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-A1 is certified to MIL-STD-810G and IP65 standards. What this means is it is proven to withstand drops up to 120cm, water, dust and extreme temperatures ranging from -10 to +50 degrees Celsius. In other words, it is a highly durable tablet, suitable for a range of mobile working scenarios.
Steve Lewis of PanSolutions explains: "Ruggedised tablets are currently emerging and are in use around the world by people such as the insurance industry, banking sector, emergency services, medical services, mining operations, production lines and car makers. Panasonic's answer to this growing market - the Toughpad - gives you all of the features you need in a tablet along with added features that make it a powerful accessory for extreme applications."
At the heart of the Toughpad is a Marvell 1.2GHz dual-core processor with enough power to serve the oversize needs of industry. The display is a 10.1-inch 500nit daylight readable TFT with ambient light sensor and anti-glare film that is suitable for use in outdoor environments.
In addition to micro and USB slots, the Toughpad also features 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage as well as a micro SD slot that gives you an additional 32GB. All in a package that is slim and light enough to carry with you while you work. As you'd expect, the tablet includes connectivity via WiFi, Bluetooth and optional 3G, while the Li-Ion battery gives you up to 10 hours of battery life. Moreover, the battery itself is replaceable, which means the Toughpad can go on working as long as you do.
Other features include Satellite GPS, large touch-screen interface, built-in front and back-facing camera, waterproof speaker and microphone. The versatile Android platform allows companies to custom-design their own fit-for-purpose applications, or choose from the hundreds of thousands of apps already in existence.
In security, the Toughpad goes well beyond the capabilities of your average consumer tablet, as Lewis explains: "Today, information security is highly important to every business," says Lewis. "The Toughpad features a dedicated security processor at hardware level, which provides a high level of tamper resistance without burdening the main processor - freeing it up for more important tasks. This is something you just won't find within your average tablet."
In almost every industry, the tablet revolution has changed the way businesses do business, allowing workers to access information quickly and easily in any media format required. Tasks that formerly required engineers and workers to carry voluminous plans, diagrams, schematics and other information vital to keep the wheels of industry turning are now literally at their fingertips.
With a host of extra features that make performing hard tasks that much easier, the Toughpad goes one step further to package the power of a tablet in a slim, light, durable shell that can survive the rigours of the toughest jobs. All things considered, for the applications of industry, the Toughpad is a tough package to beat.
