Pay as you grow concept launched by Oracle

Johannesburg, 06 Nov 2001

Oracle SA has launched a "pay as you grow" scheme for companies investing in its database and server offerings.

Deon Roos, Oracle SA product manager (Server Technology), says Oracle`s Real Application Clusters (RAC) initiative enables business to map budget allocations to growth.

"In other words, instead of installing large servers to cater for future growth they can now start with a small server and add addition similar hardware if and when required."

The concept is made possible, says Roos, by Oracle`s 9i Database and its Real Application Clusters (RAC) concept that permits a series of small servers to be linked to deliver appropriate computing power.

"The Oracle9i Database is central to the concept because it does not require the data to be partitioned among multiple servers. Therefore applications do not need to be modified as more servers are added and the system is scaled. "Conversely, when an economy slows, customers look for ways to save money. Oracle9i is specifically designed to reduce hardware costs in this eventuality."

Roos adds that in terms of cost of ownership, the Oracle RAC scheme can reduce costs by 50% or more.
